NDC and ONE Order: What Airline Finance Teams Should Prepare For

Why finance should be involved early

Modern airline retailing initiatives can change the way offers, orders, payments, servicing and fulfillment information reach downstream financial systems. Finance and revenue accounting teams should participate from the requirements stage rather than waiting for implementation testing.

Map the end-to-end financial events

Identify the business events that create accounting consequences, including order creation, payment, fulfillment, exchange, refund, ancillary services and interline interactions. Assign an accountable owner to each event and its data.

Revisit reconciliation and revenue recognition

Design traceability between commercial transactions, fulfillment records, payment records and the general ledger. Review how relevant IFRS 15 policies apply to the products and services offered, with the airline’s accounting specialists.

Plan for coexistence and integration

During transformation, legacy ticket-based and newer order-based flows may coexist. Define data mappings, exception handling, audit trails and cutover controls before operational deployment.

Test business scenarios, not only interfaces

Include voluntary and involuntary changes, partial fulfillment, multi-currency transactions, refunds, settlement exceptions and ancillary servicing in end-to-end testing. Validate accounting outputs as well as technical connectivity.
