IFRS 15 for Airlines: Revenue Recognition and Operational Readiness

IFRS 15 in an airline environment

IFRS 15 establishes a framework for recognizing revenue from contracts with customers. Airlines must assess how that framework applies to passenger transport, ancillary services, changes, refunds and other products under their particular contracts and accounting policies.

Start with performance obligations

Document the products and services promised to customers and assess whether they represent distinct performance obligations. Finance, commercial, legal and operational teams should agree on the relevant transaction flows and the evidence required for recognition.

Connect commercial events with accounting events

Map booking, ticket issuance, payment, fulfillment, exchange, refund and expiry events to the revenue accounting system and general ledger. The mapping should identify ownership, timing, supporting records and exceptions.

Review ancillary services and changes

Ancillary products and modifications may require additional analysis depending on the contractual terms. Establish a documented approach to changes in transaction price, refunds and unfulfilled services, with review by qualified accounting professionals.

Build traceable controls

Controls should support complete and accurate source data, approved accounting rules, reconciliations, review of manual adjustments and a defensible audit trail. Monitor exception trends and unresolved balances.

Test system and process readiness

Include realistic end-to-end scenarios in implementation testing: multiple currencies, partial fulfillment, exchanges, cancellations, interline transactions and ancillary services. Confirm that financial reporting remains traceable to the originating transaction.
